The best place to find people to talk to is booksalefinder.com. This is not only the place to find great book sales around your area, it is where you can gather a number of email addresses and phone numbers of people running these sales. If you can contact the person that is holding the sale, they will get to know you, know you're looking out for books and think about you the next time the sale comes up. I've met a lot of people this way and have negotiated a price to buy huge quantities of books such as the books that were leftover after the sale. This also gives me a reoccurring source of inventory because most of these sales are held once a year and they will remember you next year.
Your next best place to find people is publiclibraries.com. This is because of the Friends of the Library sales. Nearly all public libraries have Friends groups that raise money for that respective library. By using the contacts on this site, you will be able to get a foot in the door at each library of your choosing. Typically, this will not get you in contact with the Friends chapter president, but they will typically forward your request onto them so that they get the message.
I could go into dozens more places where you could make contacts at but if you put this strategy to work on booksalefinder.com and publiclibraries.com, you will have your hands full for a long time. Additional sources may include used bookstore owners like my story above, landfill employees that could notify you of books being dumped, your postman to notify you of books laid out on the curb, etc. Use your imagination here! Since books are so prevalent, you'd be surprised what kind of places you will find them hiding.
